The Patent Clerk by Billy McDaniel
An ordinary man's mundane life as a patent clerk steals away his youth. Hoping to extend the quality of his remaining years, he takes a tip from a friend who explains that its his predictable routine that causes the days to go by so swiftly. By making small changes to his daily routine, he discovers a new sense of adventure that opens up opportunities that never could have existed before. His new discovery quickly becomes an obsession as each passing day seems to deliver a richer quality to the patent clerk's life.
Before long, the man begins to feel corralled by the world at large into going back to his old routine. Hesitant to return to the mundane lifestyle, he continues on his new path until he realizes that someone is trying to control his destiny. Freedom of choice seems limited as the clerk struggles to break away from the suggestions and manipulations presented by strangers, co-workers and supposed friends. No longer controlled by their suggestions, the man discovers his enemies are individuals from the future. They have come back to keep the patent clerk on a path that will inevitably lead to something so important that it will save the human race. Unaware of what event in his near future could make such a difference, the man continues to defy fate, fighting for his life as he hopes to resolve the conflict.
